RESIDENTIAL PROCESS

Designing a custom home or transforming an existing one is a deeply personal journey. Your home should reflect the way you live, support your lifestyle, and provide lasting value for years to come.

Whether you're building a new custom home, planning an addition, or renovating your existing residence, our process is designed to make the experience enjoyable, collaborative, and transparent. We guide you through every decision with thoughtful design, practical expertise, and clear communication, helping you create a home you'll love while making confident decisions along the way.

Our five-phase approach provides a clear path from your first ideas to the day you move in.

Phase 1: Discovery

Every great home begins with understanding the people who will live in it.

Before we begin designing, we take the time to learn about your family, your lifestyle, your goals, and what you envision for your home. We discuss how you live today, how your needs may evolve in the future, your design preferences, budget, and schedule. We also evaluate your property and identify opportunities or constraints that may influence the design.

By understanding your priorities from the beginning, we create a foundation for a home that is uniquely yours.

Phase 2: Design

With a clear understanding of your goals, we begin transforming ideas into a home that is both beautiful and functional. We carefully balance aesthetics, livability, natural light, views, and flow while considering how every space supports your daily life.

Through an interactive design process, we use advanced technology—including detailed construction drawings, 3D models, and animated renderings—to explore concepts, refine layouts, and bring your vision to life. These tools allow you to fully visualize your home throughout the design process, ensuring every detail reflects your priorities and goals.

Our goal is to create a home that feels uniquely personal while remaining practical to build and enjoyable to live in.

Phase 3: Detail

Exceptional homes are defined by thoughtful details.

Once the overall design is established, we develop the technical drawings and specifications needed to bring your home to life. We coordinate all engineering and specialty consultants, manage the permitting and agency review process, and ensure every detail is thoughtfully integrated. Each element is carefully coordinated to ensure the design can be accurately priced, permitted, and constructed.

Attention to detail during this phase helps minimize surprises during construction while preserving the integrity of the design you've invested in.

Phase 4: Valuation

The Valuation phase bridges the gap between design and construction by helping you and your General Contractor understand the cost implications of the design. We support the estimating process by answering questions, clarifying details, reviewing proposals, and identifying opportunities to align the project with your budget goals.

Through our construction knowledge and design expertise, we evaluate value engineering options to maximize the value of your investment while preserving the character, quality, and intent of your home. Whether working with a preferred builder or through a competitive bidding process, we help you make informed decisions as you prepare for construction.

Phase 5: Realization

Watching your vision become reality is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.

During construction, we remain actively involved to help ensure your home is built in accordance with the design intent. We work collaboratively with you, your builder, and the project team to answer questions, review submittals, observe construction progress, and address challenges as they arise.

Our continued involvement provides peace of mind and helps keep the project moving smoothly through completion.

The result is more than a finished house—it's a home thoughtfully designed around the way you live.

Exceptional interior design is about creating environments that inspire, comfort, and enrich everyday life. Through the thoughtful integration of materials, textures, colors, lighting, and architectural details, interior design influences how a space feels, how it is experienced, and the lasting impression it leaves.

Whether we're designing the interiors of a custom home or transforming an existing residence, we begin by understanding your aesthetic preferences, sources of inspiration, and the atmosphere you want each space to create. From there, we develop a cohesive design vision that thoughtfully integrates cabinetry, flooring, lighting, finishes, fixtures, and architectural details into a home that feels timeless, refined, and uniquely yours.

Interior Design

Throughout the design process, we present carefully curated options, material palettes, and finish boards that allow you to visualize different possibilities and experience how individual selections work together as a complete design. Rather than overwhelming you with endless choices, we provide thoughtful recommendations and guide you toward selections that balance beauty, quality, performance, and value.

As each decision is made, every finish, fixture, and custom detail is meticulously documented and incorporated into the construction drawings. We continually refine and coordinate these details to ensure the design intent is clearly communicated to the builder and that every element is properly integrated before construction begins.

The most successful interiors are defined by exceptional attention to detail. From custom millwork and specialty lighting to finish transitions and architectural accents, precise coordination is what transforms a collection of individual selections into a cohesive, highly customized home. This level of detail is essential to achieving the craftsmanship, quality, and seamless execution expected in luxury residential design.

Design-build brings the Owner, Architect, and Contractor together as one collaborative team from the very beginning of the project. This integrated approach promotes early communication, informed decision-making, and a shared commitment to delivering the best possible outcome.

At Sun Mountain Design Group, we have extensive experience working with a wide range of design-build teams on projects of every size and complexity. We collaborate closely with both the Owner and Contractor to balance design excellence, constructability, budget, and schedule throughout the life of the project.

Design-Build

Early contractor involvement allows construction methods, material selections, scheduling, and cost considerations to be evaluated as the design evolves, helping identify opportunities, reduce costly changes, and improve overall project efficiency. As decisions are made, we continually refine and coordinate the construction documents to clearly communicate the design intent and support a seamless transition into construction.

Our collaboration continues throughout construction as we respond to contractor questions, review submittals, coordinate design refinements, and help resolve challenges quickly and efficiently. By maintaining open communication from concept through completion, our design-build process streamlines project delivery while helping ensure every project is thoughtfully designed, carefully coordinated, and successfully built.
