Sun Mountain’s transformation of a historic brick-and-mortar building in Old Colorado City into the vibrant Pizzeria Leopold is a premier example of successful adaptive reuse architecture. By honoring the site’s original industrial masonry while injecting a contemporary design language, our team created a dining destination that feels deeply rooted in the historic neighborhood’s heritage while offering a refreshingly modern experience. This comprehensive renovation involved a complete interior overhaul, incorporating structural reinforcements and bespoke architectural elements to house a high-performance commercial kitchen, a sophisticated bar, and an open-concept dining room, all while preserving the building's iconic historic character. 

The floor plan is masterfully calibrated to balance the facility’s dual identity as a bustling Colorado Springs bistro and an intimate neighborhood market. The layout flows intuitively from a curated gourmet grocery and deli section to the heart of the establishment: a dynamic pizza counter and cocktail bar. To harmonize the owners' established brand with this new setting, the architecture utilizes clean lines, strategic lighting, and premium finishes. These contemporary touches provide a striking modern counterpoint to the raw, textured original brick walls, resulting in an atmosphere that is as aesthetically elevated as it is welcoming. 

The project’s most dramatic architectural intervention is the addition of a custom rooftop dining deck, which significantly expands the usable footprint and value of the property. This outdoor dining space functions as an elevated urban room, featuring a dedicated bar and a custom wood-fired oven. The deck is meticulously positioned to leverage expansive mountain views, framing the Colorado scenery as a stunning backdrop to the vibrant energy of the Old Colorado City district below. Through this seamless integration of historic preservation and thoughtful modern expansion, Pizzeria Leopold has become a premier community anchor—a space where innovative architecture and culinary artistry converge to foster meaningful human connection.
